19th-century chess boards.
Here we have my collection of antique chess boards from the 19th century.
49 cms X 34 cms folded. This chessboard is in walnut.
Very nice marquetry work.
Overall size is 68 cms X 49 cms Squares are 52mm wide.
The famous French players Fréderic and Gustave Lazard in 1911 were using a similar chessboard. This picture was taken either at the famous Régence Café or at the Cercle Philidor in Paris. Many other pictures from the 19th show that similar folded chessboards were used at the famous Café de la Régence.

Foldable antique wooden chess board dated 1820
This chessboard with a lovely and rustic patina goes very well with my Dutch Selenus set.
Lovely patina, squares are 3.8 cms.
This quite large chessboard (squares are 4.5 cms and overall unfolded it is 43 cms) might have been made by George Merrifield, the famous London-based turner. This has been confirmed by Jon Crumiller (one of the greatest chess set collectors and reputed experts). A similar chessboard can be viewed on his website :
